DIAMOND BASICS

What Makes a Diamond Valuable?

Diamond value and appearance are influenced by several characteristics working together. Understanding these fundamentals helps you compare diamonds more intelligently instead of judging only by carat weight or price.

01

Beauty

A diamond's visual beauty is strongly affected by cut quality, proportions, symmetry and the way it interacts with light.

02

Rarity

Certain combinations of size, color, clarity, shape and grading characteristics may be less common and therefore influence value.

03

Certification

Independent grading reports provide documented information about a diamond's measured and graded characteristics.

THE 4Cs OF DIAMONDS

Cut. Color. Clarity. Carat.

The internationally recognized 4Cs provide a practical framework for evaluating and comparing diamonds.

01 C

Cut

Cut describes how effectively a diamond's proportions and finishing allow light to enter, reflect and return to the viewer.

Brightness White light returned from the diamond.
Fire Light dispersed into spectral colors.
Scintillation Sparkle and contrast during movement.

For many buyers, cut quality is one of the most visually important characteristics.

02 C

Color

For traditional white diamonds, color grading evaluates the presence or absence of visible body color.

D E F G H I J
D–F Colorless range.
G–J Near-colorless range.

Metal color, diamond size, shape and personal preference can affect how color appears.

03 C

Clarity

Clarity evaluates internal characteristics called inclusions and external characteristics called blemishes.

FL IF VVS VS SI I

Two diamonds with the same clarity grade may still look different because inclusion type, location, size, number and visibility vary.

A carefully selected eye-clean diamond may provide excellent visual value.

04 C

Carat

Carat is a measure of diamond weight, not a direct measurement of visible size.

1 Carat = 0.20 grams

Face-up appearance also depends on shape, proportions and how weight is distributed throughout the diamond.

Compare millimeter dimensions as well as carat weight when evaluating visible size.

LIGHT PERFORMANCE

Why Cut Matters So Much

A beautifully cut diamond can appear lively, bright and visually balanced. Poor proportions may allow light to escape rather than return through the top of the diamond.

01 Proportions

Table, depth, crown and pavilion geometry affect light behavior.

02 Symmetry

Evaluates precision and alignment of facets.

03 Polish

Evaluates the quality of a diamond's finished facet surfaces.

DIAMOND SHAPES

Choose a Shape That Fits Your Style

Shape refers to the outline and form of the diamond when viewed from above. Different shapes create different visual impressions and may influence perceived size and style.

01

Round

Classic brilliance and timeless versatility.

02

Oval

Elongated silhouette with bright visual appeal.

03

Emerald

Step-cut style with elegant hall-of-mirrors appearance.

04

Radiant

Rectangular or square outline with brilliant faceting.

05

Pear

Teardrop silhouette combining curves and a tapered point.

06

Marquise

Long profile with pointed ends and strong finger coverage.

07

Cushion

Soft corners and a romantic pillow-like shape.

08

Princess

Square brilliant shape with contemporary geometry.

09

Asscher

Square step-cut with architectural depth.

10

Heart

Distinctive romantic shape requiring careful symmetry.

DIAMOND ORIGIN

Natural & Lab-Grown Diamonds

Both natural and laboratory-grown diamonds are crystalline carbon diamonds. Their primary difference is origin and formation process.

01

Natural Diamonds

Natural diamonds form through geological processes deep within the earth over extremely long periods of time.

  • Naturally formed
  • Earth-mined origin
  • Can be independently certified
  • Available across multiple qualities and shapes

02

Lab-Grown Diamonds

Lab-grown diamonds are created using controlled technological processes designed to reproduce conditions that allow diamond crystal growth.

  • Laboratory-created origin
  • Diamond crystal structure
  • Can be independently certified
  • Available across multiple qualities and shapes

FLUORESCENCE

What Is Diamond Fluorescence?

Fluorescence describes a diamond's visible response when exposed to ultraviolet light. Blue is the most common fluorescence color.

Fluorescence may be described on grading reports using levels such as None, Faint, Medium, Strong or Very Strong.

None Faint Medium Strong Very Strong

Fluorescence should be evaluated together with the diamond's overall appearance rather than in isolation.

DIAMOND CERTIFICATION

Understand the Grading Report

A grading report documents identifying measurements and quality characteristics assessed by an independent gemological laboratory.

01

Common Report Information

  • Report number
  • Diamond shape
  • Measurements
  • Carat weight
  • Color grade
  • Clarity grade
  • Cut grade where applicable
  • Polish
  • Symmetry
  • Fluorescence
  • Proportions
  • Inclusion plot or comments where applicable
02

Why Certification Matters

Certification helps buyers compare documented diamond characteristics more consistently and verify the details associated with a specific stone.

KRULUXE can assist with understanding grading terminology and certified diamond options.

EVALUATION PROCESS

How to Compare Two Diamonds

01

Confirm Certification

Review the report number and grading laboratory.

02

Compare Cut

Evaluate proportions, polish, symmetry and overall light performance.

03

Review Color & Clarity

Compare grades while considering visual appearance and setting style.

04

Check Measurements

Compare millimeter size and proportions rather than relying only on carat weight.

05

Inspect Appearance

Use high-resolution images, video or expert inspection where available.

06

Evaluate Overall Value

Consider beauty, quality, certification, budget and personal preference together.

BUYING GUIDE

How to Choose Your Diamond

The best diamond is not simply the highest grade on paper. It is the diamond that delivers the right combination of appearance, quality, dimensions, certification and price for your priorities.

01 Set Your Budget

Establish a comfortable overall budget before comparing specifications.

02 Choose Shape

Select the silhouette that best matches your design and personal preference.

03 Prioritize Cut

Strong light performance can significantly affect visual beauty.

04 Balance Color & Clarity

Avoid paying for characteristics that may not create a visible improvement for your needs.

05 Review Certification

Confirm documented grading information before purchase.

06 Ask an Expert

Request help when comparing several closely matched diamonds.

DIAMOND + SETTING

Consider the Jewelry Design Too

The appearance of a diamond changes depending on the jewelry design, metal color, setting style, proportions and surrounding stones.

Metal Color

Yellow, rose, white gold or platinum may affect how diamond color is perceived.

Setting Style

Solitaire, halo, pavé, bezel and other designs create different visual effects and levels of protection.

Finger Coverage

Elongated shapes and setting proportions can change perceived size on the hand.

DIAMOND EDUCATION FAQ

Common Diamond Questions

Which of the 4Cs is most important?

All four characteristics contribute to diamond quality and value, but cut has a particularly strong influence on visible brilliance and light performance.

Is a higher carat diamond always larger-looking?

No. Carat measures weight. Visible size also depends on shape, proportions and face-up millimeter dimensions.

Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?

Lab-grown diamonds are diamonds with the same fundamental crystalline carbon structure as natural diamonds. Their main difference is origin and formation process.

Why is diamond certification important?

An independent grading report provides documented information about the characteristics of a specific diamond and helps buyers compare stones more consistently.

What does eye-clean clarity mean?

Eye-clean generally describes a diamond whose inclusions are not readily visible without magnification under normal viewing conditions. Appearance can vary by diamond.

Can KRULUXE help me compare diamonds?

Yes. KRULUXE can help review diamond specifications, certification details, natural and lab-grown options and suitable choices based on your jewelry requirement.
